United Planets Cruiser C57-D

US flag  Forbidden Planet 1956

When I have the opportunity to introduce someone to science fiction movies, this is nearly always my first choice. It’s a magnificent film with top-notch actors and (FOR THE TIME) incredible special effects.

THIS IS WHAT SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES OUGHT TO BE. This is a terrific envisioning of what the future might hold. The movie dives right in, introducing the crew of United Planets Cruiser C57-D, now a year out to relieve a colony ship that arrived twenty years before. There is a single survivor of the colony ship, plus his daughter, plus their robot (!), plus remnants of a fantastic alien civilization. And an invisible monster… I don’t want to give too much away. Epic film.

This is truly one of the all-time great science fiction movies. Second to none. Positive, heroic, entertaining in spite of the time-to-go-get-popcorn romantic subplot. A great film in spite of the robot, who actually does quite well in most of the scenes. So much of Forbidden Planet has been “quoted” in many other science fiction films, but here is the original, the source.

I can’t think of a better science fiction movie.
