NOW BURN IT. BURN EVERYTHING!

Them!

US flag Them 1954

Giant ants!!! The first big-bug movie — atomic mutation results in giant ants! Loads of great 1950s hardware, bazookas, flamethrowers, helicopters… a father-and-daughter team of scientists… this movie is sensational. Great writing, great performances, decent special effects.

One of the best lines in the movie is the policeman’s response to the scientist’s comment while they’re inside the giant ant nest that the walls were held together with saliva: “Yeah? Spit’s all that’s holding me together right now, too.” They make their way along with the FBI agent to the bottom of the nest, the queen’s chamber, to find that some eggs have hatched. Then the female scientist snaps at the two men “Now burn it. Burn EVERYTHING!” It’s powerful stuff!

The movie slows down a bit in its final third, once the team reaches Los Angeles on the trail of the giant ants.

Overall: a fantastic science fiction movie. 100% recommended. I love this movie.
